Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Topping
No marshmallows allowed. This ain’t a kid’s birthday party.
A Little Southern Sass to Start...(Pecan Topping Only, Please!)
Look, if you grew up down South, you already know: Sweet Potato Casserole isn’t dessert—it’s a side dish. And while some folks insist on topping it with marshmallows (bless 'em), we do things a little more grown-up around here. At least for this dish.
This version is silky, spiced just right, and crowned with a brown sugar–pecan topping that’s basically butter, sugar, and a prayer. It’s crunchy, cozy, and the one thing your guests will “just take a small spoonful of”... three times.
🍴 Servings:
Serves 8–10 as a side dish
🛒 Grocery List:
For the filling:
4 large sweet potatoes (about 3 lbs), roasted or boiled
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1/3 cup melted butter
1/2 cup milk or half-and-half
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Pinch of salt
For the pecan topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup chopped pecans
👩🍳 Directions:
1. Prep the sweet potatoes:
Roast or boil the sweet potatoes until tender. Peel and mash until smooth. (Roasting gives the best flavor, but we won’t judge if you boil.)
2. Mix the filling:
In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, brown sugar, eggs, melted butter, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until smooth.
3. Assemble the casserole:
Pour the filling into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and smooth the top.
4. Make the topping:
Mix brown sugar, flour, melted butter, and pecans in a bowl until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over the sweet potato layer.
5. Bake it up:
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is set.
📝 Southern Tip:
Make it a day ahead!
Sweet potato casserole actually gets better after a little rest. Make it the night before, refrigerate, and bake fresh before serving. Just add a few extra minutes to your bake time if it's coming straight from the fridge.
💡 Serve It With:
Herb Butter Roasted Turkey
Cornbread Dressing with Sage & Sausage
Giblet Gravy
And maybe a second spoon because folks are gonna double up
With pecans on top and no marshmallow in sight,
Southern Charm Style 🍠✨
